CIVIL WAR DAY LEARNING A SUCCESS (AGAIN)!

Today we became Historians as we learned about eh past through Authentic experiences.  We visited Civil War learning stations in our outfits and then reenacted a battle after being trained by professional reenactors.  Below you can see photos, sketches, and stories from our reporters and photographers and sketch artists

Civil War Surgeons
Kripa Sigdel

As a surgeon in the Civil War, alongside the nurses, there are many direct duties.  Dr. Charu Murugesan said, "I thought it would be gross helping wounded soldiers but now it's hard, and interesting to help soldiers."  She is proud when she helps a soldier and gets them ready.

Civil War Training
Ysana Graves

The Confederate Generals look serious and ready, as well as proud, for the upcoming battle.  The Union Generals also look proud, ready, and serious,  The flag bearers stand tall and proud.

Meanwhile, the Confederate soldiers are ready to march to battle.  Captain Kuensting said, "Tell those Yankees to go home!"

General Wilson, from the Unions, states, "Go tell those traitors to go home!"

Nurse Emma and Katelyn say, We hope to be able to bandage the hurt, even if we cannot help the sick." Hopefully, the neutral nurses do not get hurt.

The Union looks very inexperienced while the Confederate side is working on their training.

Many nurses and surgeons are very nervous as the battle begins.

Soldier and Personal Life
Gracie DeVenney

As soldiers line up for training there is a wonder in the crowd who will win.  I talked to some nurses about what it is like on the field.  Nurse Stewart, "It's a risky job when you have to go on the field, you have to be careful you could be shot!"

I interviewed soldiers about their life at home.  I talked to Private Myers about recreation.

"Downtime is sometimes fun. I usually play cards and talk."

The next person I interviewed was Private Roodhouse.

"At home I wash the dishes and clean the clothes."  At home, the soldier's cook and if they have a farm, they take care of the farm animals.

I talked to Private Kreisman and what he does during down time.

"I play baseball with other friends or play card games."

At last I had time to interview General Rose. About being an officer, she explained, "Well you have to push and tell your soldiers what to do! Also it takes a lot of responsibility to be an officer.  War is a terrible place and you want to win."

I spent my time at the Civil War Battlefield interviewing people and seeing what it is like on the battlefield.  I learned it is hard to be a soldier.  But there was one story that made me upset.

Soldier Hunt told me about the fact he is on the Confederate side but his son is on the Union side.

"The fact that my son is on the Union side is horrible.  I don;t want to kill him, he is my son!"

That is a sad story.  That was all the news for today.  I'm Gracie DeVenney, you local news reporter.

Slavery or Not
Emma Kingsley

As most know the Civil War is happening.  I am at the Battle of Centralia.  Many men died during this battle.  General Wilson was the first person down on the Union side.  Before he fell, I asked him about his views on slavery.

"It is a horrible thing and is a disgrace to our country."

I also talked to Union flag bearer, Olivia.

"It is the worst thing in the world."

There is a side that likes, the Confederacy.  I talked to a few of them.  I talked to Nina.

"It helps our growing economy."

I also talked to Captain Kuensting who said, "Get them Yankees out of my fort!"

I also talked to people who weren't in the battle.  The nurse Charu said, "It is really, really bad.  It is not right.  You can't own someone like they are property.

I also talked to Faith.  She said, "It is bad because people become property."

In the end the Confederate's won the Battle of Centralia.  Also we heard the inside scoop on slavery.  Hopefully, this changes some minds on slavery and people will give up their slaves so they can be free.
